Poems have a lot of positive effect because something which is beautifully written and sensible expressed can actually have a soothing effect on the bereaving. Friends and family can be really helpful at a time like this but this doesn't help you to put down on paper how you really felt about your mom.
Write some wonderful lines in verse in a mother's day greeting card and attach it to her equally well chosen gift. In order to make a credible argument about the poem, you will want to analyze how the poem works, what genre the poem fits into, what its themes are, and what poetic techniques and figures of speech are used. If you were very close to the person who died and you are expected to stand up in church or at the graveside to recite a poem, make sure that you have a supporter.
Writing about a person who is no longer alive is very difficult and writing about their death is worse. Once you have finished writing your poem, share your poems with family and friends. The reader is invited to share the writer's perspective in an emotional way that allows a perspective to be heard with something other than ears.
It can be framed, written in a card, spoken over the phone, recited one to one or even emailed if time is not on your side. Simplicity is the key.
